NEWS February 12th, 2026

Plantagenet, ON — Today, MPP Stéphane Sarrazin met with Mayor Yves Laviolette to
announce that the Government of Ontario is investing 8.7 million to rehabilitate water
infrastructure in The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet. The funding comes from the
province’s Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Health and Safety Water Stream
(MHIP-HSWS), which has increased by $700 million for a total of $875 million to support
access to safe drinking water, housing, job creation and protection for communities in
the event of extreme weather events in Ontario.

“This infrastructure project will ensure reliable, high-quality water services for the
Plantagenet community, while supporting local development and long-term
sustainability. We are pleased to work with the township to provide modern
infrastructure that will benefit residents for many years to come.” said Stéphane
Sarrazin, MPP for Glengarry–Prescott–Russell.

The MHIP-HSWS funding will be used in Alfred-Plantagenet to rehabilitate and expand
two sewage pumping stations and their associated force mains in the village of
Plantagenet. The project includes installing SCADA/PLC remote monitoring with secure
telemetry and analytics, variable frequency drives and pump control tuned to Best-
Efficiency-Point, condition-based monitoring for predictive maintenance, self-cleaning
wet-well geometry with solids-handling pumps and submersible mixers, odour control,
and provisions for wastewater heat recovery and emergency backup power, as well as
the replacement and upsizing of approximately 300m of force main at pumping station
no. 1, and upgrade of roughly 970m of force main at pumping station No. 2.

“The Township of Alfred and Plantagenet is extremely grateful to the province of Ontario
and our MPP Stéphane Sarrazin for recognizing the urgent need to modernize and
expand the Plantagenet lagoon wastewater treatment system. The outcomes of this
water infrastructure project will improve health and safety for our citizens and promote
the preservation of the current housing supply within the community, while allowing for
significant growth in Plantagenet for years to come.” said Yves Laviolette, Mayor of the
Township of Alfred and Plantagenet.

This funding is part of a historic investment of $4 billion in the Municipal Housing
Infrastructure Program (MHIP), included in Ontario’s $220 billion capital plan, the most
ambitious in the province’s history, to build transit, highways, hospitals, schools and
water infrastructure that enables new housing.

  • The MHIP is comprised of four funding streams: the Housing-Enabling Water
Systems Fund (HEWSF), the Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) Stream, the
Health and Safety Water Stream (HSWS) and the Agriculture and Irrigation Stream.
  • In January 2025, Ontario announced an initial investment of $175 million to launch
